Her father worked as a used car seller. Her mother is German who emigrated into her home in United States from Germany in 1958. After 10 years of combating breast cancer, Handler died in 1989. Handler is a reform Jew as well as her father who was Jewish. Handler was blessed with a joyful, healthy childhood in a good neighbourhood. As a teenager She made the move from the city of Los Angeles, California to pursue a career in acting. To help support herself, Handler began to work as an actor. Handler, who was then 21 years of age, decided to focus on stand-up comedy full time when she discovered her story telling skills. Handler started her stand-up career on her role on the Oxygen Network's Girls Behaving Poorly which was a reality program with a hidden-camera/practical joke. This reality TV show ran from 2002 until 2005. Handler began appearing on different shows such including Weekends at D.L., The Bernie Mac Show, The Practice and My Wife and Kids. Handler started working as a corresponded on The Tonight Show. Handler made her breakthrough in 2006 by hosting her own E! show. The show was titled Chelsea Handler. The show ran for two seasons. The following year, Handler performed on the Comedy Central's Hour Stand-Up Comedy Tour in the United States. VH1, Comedy Central Premium Blend (and HBO) have been able to broadcast live stand-up shows. It was announced in 2010 that she would host MTV's Video Music Awards in 2010.
